Legendary Irish musician SHARON SHANNON is renowned for embracing all musical genres and collaborating with many different artists including U2, Sinead O’Connor, Wille Nelson, Steve Earle, Jackson Browne, Nigel Kennedy and Christy Moore to name a few…..

She is the only traditional Irish musician to cross-over into mainstream pop/rock and have number one singles, albums and DVDs in the Irish pop charts. Her version of the Steve Earle penned The Galway Girl with Mundy on vocals was the biggest downloaded single in 2008 and 2009. She is a multi-platinum selling artist and has won several Meteor Awards including being the youngest ever recipient of the Meteor Lifetime Achievement Award. Her music has been featured in several Hollywood movies, TV series and an award-winning Bulmers TV commercial campaign.

In March 2012, she takes her big band to Australia and New Zealand. As well as bringing the finest of talent from Ireland and the UK, she is also recruiting some of Australia and New Zealand’s top musicians to create a truly unique and global sound. Selecting music from her renowned repertoire and new compositions from Shannon herself, the line-up will create a sound which will have the Shannon’s trade mark tone (she plays custom built Italian accordions from the 200 year Castagnari family workshop) at the centre but will be backed by rock solid rhythm section and feature jazz, funk, blues, bluegrass intonations in the mix.

This cross-cultural/cross- genre collection will bring together, for the first time ever in a series of unique performances, the top Irish, English, Australian and New Zealand musicians in concert.

With Shannon leading the way on accordion and whistle, the 8 piece band is composed of acoustic and electric guitars, drums, bass, keyboards, fiddle and saxophone.

VIKA & LINDA

For 25 years, the glorious voices of Vika and Linda Bull have comprised one of the most distinctive, versatile and emotionally charged sounds on the Australian music landscape. Since their multi-platinum conquest of pop radio with the Black Sorrows in the late 1980s, the sisters have forged diverse pathways into soul, gospel, blues, country and the island music of their Tongan ancestry. By turns tender and powerful, their rich solo vocals and instinctive harmonies have spawned eight albums of their own, as well as illuminating studio and concert performances by Paul Kelly, Renee Geyer, John Farnham, Hunters & Collectors, Tim Finn, Kasey Chambers, John Butler and many more. Born of a Tongan mother and Australian father, Vika and Linda have been singing together for as long as they can rememb

With my brother Dan Acfield (QLD)

An impulsive traveller and compulsive singer, Dan accepted his troubadour destiny at an early age. Even before he was old enough to speak, Dan had managed to amuse his parents with irrepressible car karaoke, and in a TV-free home environment, he took up songwriting at the early age of 9.

Following in the footsteps of musical ancestors (ranging from a New York hymn-writing orchestral musician, to a grandfather who played bass for everyone from Cat Stevens to Kamahl), Dan attended music school.  Armed with a healthy combination of both respect and scepticism, Dan transitioned from his studies into the Brisbane music scene confidently, emerging as an enthusiastic champion of tidy pop-rock anthems.

Dan’s knack for teaming catchy guitar hooks with interesting but unpretentious lyrics has already earned him the attention of local music aficionados, as well as a Highly Commended (Rock Category) in the 2010 QSong Awards.

t's been a long time coming. We've been thinking about how to make this happen. We may live in separate cities but we're determined.

Dan and Hannah are combining forces, the debut Brisbane show is on Hannah's birthday April 29 2011. Come join us and help us celebrate what has been inevitable for years! Two Acfields, two guitars, two voices and hopefully more than two people.

A little about house concerts: there is quite a big circuit in the US for house concerts which help touring musicians in between gigs at venues. I have been to several here for folk musicians and it is really nice way to hear the songwriter in such an intimate and comfortable surroundings with like-minded people. No parking problems, a good hour and it is nice to chat to the artist about the songs if you want to.

Grass Roots Music Festival Heralds Spring At Mount Coot-tha The lineup for 2010 includes 8 Ball Aitken & His Band, Blind Lemon, Rose Carleo, Rod Dowsett, Hannah Acfield, Goreng Goreng, David Flower & Pacha Mama. ... ... For several years, an expanding community of like-minded people has been gathering each year to frolic in the Springtime weather and listen to live original music on Brisbane’s most beautiful mountain. Most attendees return year after year, bringing growing numbers of friends and generations of family with them. Within this urban tribe, new bands have formed, romances have developed, and young children have blossomed into teenagers. The tribe re-convenes this month, with the 6th Annual Grass Roots Music Festival taking place at the Mt. Coot-tha Botanical Gardens concert stage on Sunday, 21 November, 2010 from 10:30 am to 5 pm. Completely free of charge and open to everyone, the event is generously sponsored by the Brisbane City Council and a range of local music industry publications and organisations. The day provides an opportunity for Brisbane residents to enjoy the lush gardens and spectacular scenery of the Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens, with the perfect setting for family picnics and free-spirited dancing. Hosted by Queensland blues/country roots musician 8 Ball Aitken and His Band, the event features prize-winning blues legends Blind Lemon, country songbird Rose Carleo, the country rock of Rod Dowsett, folk-pop icon Hannah Acfield, indigenous roots band Gooreng Gooreng, the folk-rock sounds of David Flower, and the up-tempo roots music of Pacha Mama. The event was founded by Aitken in 2005, and continues to feature and promote 100% original roots, blues, folk, acoustic rock, country and alt. country music on the mountain each year. "This Brisbane City Council-supported event has been a gathering place and a launching board for dozens of Brisbane's favourite roots musicians over the last five years," explains 8 Ball. "It is a genuine platform for getting heard in the local Brisbane scene. This is a great opportunity for bands to make new fans, and for music fans to discover the top talent available here in our own backyard." The red-headed guitar-slinger has been on the road, touring for ten months out of twelve each year. In 2010, Aitken has already completed two extended tours to Memphis and Nashville in the USA, and a month-long tour in Germany. He has also toured to every Australian state and territory in the past year. He has a few surprises in store for his Mount Coot-tha gig. “I will be premiering my new custom-made 8 Ball Aitken Maton 12 string guitar at the festival. As a Maton-endorsed player, I am honored to perform with this amazing instrument for the first time in Brisbane. It looks very cool… it’s covered in 8 balls!” Aitken will also be launching his new DVD at the Grass Roots Music Festival, which features all the videos receiving airplay on Rage, Southern Cross Ten, the Country Music Channel, and on fourteen different television stations throughout Europe. The videos also air to seven million households in the USA on cable TV, and one song, “The Party”, is about to go to air coast-to-coast in the USA on the A&E channel. This year’s festival features a diverse line-up of the full roots music spectrum, with music to please anyone who enjoys original country, alt.country, folk, blues, and roots-rock. The free, family-friendly event promises to being a new level of musical enjoyment to the Mount Coot-tha Botanical Gardens on Sunday, 21 November. For more information about the 2010 Grass Roots Music Festival, check out www.grassrootsmusicfestival.com.au, or ring 0408 075 959.
